Wilpattu National Park – Land of Lakes & Leopards
Wilpattu National Park, located in Sri Lanka’s Northwest coast dry zone, is one of the country’s largest and oldest protected wildlife reserves. Its most unique and defining feature is the presence of “Willus”—natural, sand-rimmed water basins that fill with rainwater. These shimmering lakes create a striking landscape and serve as essential watering holes for wildlife throughout the year.
Situated about 30 km west of Anuradhapura and 26 km north of Puttalam—approximately 180 km from Colombo—Wilpattu spans an impressive 131,693 hectares, with elevations ranging from sea level to about 152 meters. Across its vast expanse lie nearly sixty Willus and tanks, forming a mosaic of forest, scrubland, and open plains.
Wilpattu is internationally renowned as a prime destination for spotting the Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya). While the exact population remains unconfirmed, the park is celebrated among wildlife enthusiasts for offering some of the best opportunities to observe these elusive big cats in their natural habitat.
Home to rich biodiversity and untouched wilderness, Wilpattu promises an authentic and unforgettable safari experience—where serene lakes, ancient forests, and majestic wildlife come together in perfect harmony.
